Calcium Gluconate is the water-soluble calcium salt of gluconic acid. This medication is used by veterinarians for the treatment of hypocalcemia and other conditions in which increased serum levels of calcium would prove beneficial to the animal. This medicine is also used as a preventative against hypocalcemia during a blood transfusion, as a cardiac stimulant when epinephrine has proven ineffective and as a psychological antagonist to potassium in cases of hyperkalemia. Calcium Gluconate is also used to treat eclampsia in dogs and cats, dystocia, uterine inertia and as a treatment for insect stings and bites.
